I just wrote a short story about a lady named rosalind breaking her tibia: Here goes
20 year old Rosalind injured her leg when she slipped off a ladder at home. It was painful but not too bad, her mother drove her to Hospital where a fracture was diagnosed. After having it set she spend an uncofomrtable Sunday night in a hospital bed with her leg in a splint. She was taken to the fracture clinic for a further set of xrays and examinations, and the doctor
doctor advised she would need a cast on for six weeks, with her next appointment in four to check her progress. Ros had always wanted a cast and envied her friends how had them even though she was not sure how she would cope. As a bank cashier she would have to return to work after a week or so, but these thoughts were furthest from her mind as she was wheeled into the cast room, with a form from the doctor asking for a short leg weight bearing cast to be applied. She was introduced to Helen who would be applying the cast and senior Tech Amanda who was busy casting an older woman's arm. There were only two working that day plus a nurse brought into to cover unexpected sickness. Helen told Rosalind (Ros) she would be getting a plaster cast with a heel to walk on and would explain more as she went along. Ros was a well proportioned 5'5" young woman with blonde hair. Helen positioned her leg on a rest and began work, telling the nurse she would need her help in supporting Ros's leg and in smoothing the plaster. First a stockinette covered her lower leg, with padding around her ankle and the fracture site three inches above the ankle. Helen quickly applied two rolls of plaster around her foot before working her way up to her knee. She applied a backslab covering the back shin, ankle and underfoot, telling the nurse, who was just starting this area of work it was needed to make a flat base for the heel to sit on .the pair worked away smoothing the plaster around the ankle and under her foot. By now the addition of another two layers meant the above ankle part had enough plaster so Helen and the nurse smoothed it all over annd tucked the loose stockinette reaching to her hkee to form a smooth top to the cast so that the stocking rests against her skin. By now the three were chatting away about anything and Amanda poped her head through the cutain dividing the two casting areas to see how they were getting on. Now came the application of the heel. Helen had already got out three heels to show the nurse the options. One ha a ribbed sole, the second was a flat single heel and the third a double heel. Helen said she prefered the ribbed one slightly although there wasn't much difference. When they measured them on Ros's foot, she said the single one would be less bulky to apply but firmer as there were longer flat ends. Ros was delighted inside she would be getting a single heel. Helen and the nurse worked quickly to apply it while the rest of the cast was still wet enough
They used two layers to attach the heel wrapping the plaster around the top of her foot and ankle. Ros realised now she had the thick cast she craved, Helen said it was important to make sure there was enough plaster to hold the heel once it set and was weight bearing. as they smoothed plaster under her foot, then the They smoothed some of the loose plaster on top of her foot. As they worked Helen had explained that unless their was a toeplate, to make sure all the toes were outside the cast to prevent rubbing. Ros's toes had drips of plaster on them, and the nurse turned back the stockingette and worked the ends into the plaster while Helen used her fingers and a cloth to wipe away any loose lumps of plaster from the heel area. For the first time Ros was fully aware of the weight of her cast and how much her toes seemed to be sticking out. The pair finished smoothing the plaster. Ros laughed at least I can move my toes. Her big toe had spots of plaster with streaks under her foot. Amanda came in to inspect their finished work and said you two have done well here. Amanda told Ros they would give her list of dos and donts and that it is 48 hours before the cast is fully weight bearing so they would be giving her crutches. Ros said she was surprised how heavy the cast is, Amanda said it is alwys like that at first. Ros relaxed on the bed, peering at the solid encasement of her lower limb, the nurse wiped away the specks of loose plaster on her foot and sole, and made Ros excited as she gripped the two little ones to clean them. Ros' nails were neat and unpolished.

Part 2 After a few days rest, Ros's first outing was on the Saturday to her local town centre to meet her friends. She hadn't seen them since the injury, and had been lightly walking at home using her crutches. She only lived a 5 minute walk from the centre, so thought this was an opportune time to see how it wennt . After all, she wasn't going to become a recluse because of a broken leg. It was a warm day so Ros wore t-shirt and above knee skirt that showed off the entire cast. Her mum said she should wear a sock but after trying a couple and finding them hard to get on, she went without what she preferred anyway. Her greatest fear was that mum would knitt her pairs of special socks. She hadn't yet got the hang of painting her nails yet so they were natural with still s few specks of the plaster on. She set out on her crutches and found it quite hard to half weight bear so held them and took a few strides on her heel that now the cast had fully hardened she was much more confident in. The plaster was heavy but she did enjoy the sensation of walking on the square of rubber seit into it. So she took her crutches home and set out again. Meeting 6 of her friends in a coffee shop they all wanted to know her story, and look at the cast. She rested it on a spare seat. Her friend kerry asked to lift up her leg and was amazed at its weight and hardness, never having a cast herself. Jen asked why she hadnt worn a sock, Ros said to give you all a view of my toes, I sure you couldn't wait. Also it wasn't autograph time yet, deep down she wanted a week or two of pristine bliss before letting them loose with the feltpenstips. After their coffees it was time for the shops before deciding on the evenings social venue. Ros said shed be a bit of a lightweight as she couldn't drink and definitely wouldn't be trying to dance
Ros's week back at work had gone well. She could sit down all day to do her job and it was up to her whether to cover the cast, she found the trousers difficult to pull over her cast. By the Saturday she was ready to party,she bought a new skirt showing off her lower thigh, and a couple of her friends called to visit, Ros put a stileto on her right foot and tried to balance, found she was putting all her weight on her casted leg! Then they decided Ros needed her nails should be painted bright pink. She placed her leg on a cofee table as Kerry and Jen sat round. Jen got to work on her nails as Kerry supported her toes. Even her cute little nail had a touch of pink. Ros felt a strange wave of pleasure as her friends then shreiked as Kerry tickled her super sensitive third toe. Ros admired their handiwork but insited she wanted the cast unsigned for another week.
Into her third week, Ros was really getting the hang of walking on the heel, there were a couple of wet days when she wore a bag and sock and used her crutches. She'd mastered the art of getting upstairs, by the Saturday she could resist it no longer, the cast needed signings for the last week. Her friend Sally had a flatshare, and they would have a party there, Kerry and Jen called in before their Saturday afternoon trip into next town as their was better shopping, they would have to go by bus, Ros's first trip on transport since her break. Ros found a couple of biros and marker pens, Kerry drew a smilie face with her name in the middle of her shin, Ros didn't feel it at all, Jen liked seeing her own name so it was no surprise when she wrote it in green felt on the top of her foot. The bus was busy and on another warm day Ros looked conspicuously casted in her skirt as she boared, having to angle her leg to avoid her toes bumping the drivers box. The seats were narrow and cramped and she found it hard to stop either the back of her heel or toes touching something, there wasnt room for her to cross her legs. The three friends chatted away about what they wanted to buy during the 20 minute ride. They arrived at the bus station and Ros was josled by an older woman as the disembarked, the bus station ground was very uneven and Ros found it hard to walk on,. In the town the went into a department store, and Ros,s heel sqeaked as sh crossed the polised fllor, much to the friends amusement. Ros tried on a new pair of sandals (well the right one) and bought them to the surprise of the assistant who asked her about the leg and said it looked really heavy. After this they reurned by bus, there was a long queue and all the friends had to stand before a woman noticed her cast and offered Ros a seat, telling her she had a cast a few months ago. Onto the party that was a housewarming as well as cast signing one. Once they'd had a drink Ros invited signatures and artwork. One guy just wrote "your phone number" as he obviously faancied her. Ross changed from having her leg on a chair to waving it at right angles in the air so anyone could sign the basck of her leg or underfoot.
Shed got about 20 signing by now,
even one right under her foot. After a couple of weeks full use the heel was just starting to wear down and get pressed into the foot, though the plaster was still thick and solid. Ros avoided getting it wet or muddy though the stockinette on the sole was slightly loose. The rest of the cast was as solid as ever. On the Tuesday she went shopping after work and caught the bus home, she slipped slighty on the damp suface at the shop, bumping her big toe on a nearby tree, a painful move but do real damage. It did slow her down for the next day or to though. By Friday she was back to normal and wondered whether she would get a new cast at her Monday appointment. She had a busy weekend with her Saturday social life and family visitors on the Sunday. On the Saturday evening she went for a meal with friends, one or two other people at the restaurant wanted to sign. Sunday morning she had a good look at the cast. Above ankle was perfect as was the top of ther foot, underneath there was wear around the back ankle and uderfoot. The heel was still solidly in place but wearing down, while some of the front underfoot was worn with the stockette tearing awy from the plaster. Thats it for a few days.
Monday morning was apointment time, hers was at 10, and her mother gave her a lift on the way in to work, meaning she had an hour to obself any of the other castees. Her eyes was caught by a petite sporty girl in her late 20s, who introduced herself as Ellen. She couldn't keep herself from looking at the worn and decorated cast. Being small she had one of the double heels set in, they had worn down so much Ellen walked on the front foot plaster . "Ive walked on this too much" said Ellen, noticing Ros's glances. She lifted her foot up and placed it on the vacant chair between the two of them. The two heels were thin and blackened with wear and little higher than the plaster. Only a few strands of plaster now held the front heel ain place, and the plaster along the front foot was grey and flaky and a contrast to that still inact top of foot. The bottom of Ellen's toes were grubby with grains of plaster dust on. Ellen said she had been in the cast six weeks and her leg felt fine. She turned her foot round, Ros could now see the tops of Ellen's toes, clean and varnished. Ellen was called to the desk to check her appointment pleasing Ros who saw her toes touch the ground as part of her gait. She returned saying she was hoping to be out of plaster today and definitely this cast. Ros also noticed a few of the other people there, a woman with a slc that hardly seemed to have worn and a young student with a cast completely decorated. Ellen was called first to be examined and xrayed after a couple of other people it was Ros's turn just after 10....tbc
