Perfect World p2

Part 2

"Oh god what have I done!"

Mario was back at the office preparing for a case in his posh downtown Houston law office trying to reach Sydney on her cell phone.

Just like Sydney, he like what he did and he did it well. He had known that he wanted from the first time he saw her at the museum. How could he cheat on her.

His wife Sydney would push him into making appearances at parties and benefits to make those important contacts and network. Gettinng his face out there so thatthe community would know who he was and where he stood on the issues.

Sydney controlled everything. Thanks to Sydney's insistence on a strict diet, exercise. Whenever he was looking at the various casters sites, Mario would fantasize about having sex with these sexy women with leg cast. But now he didn't have to worry about cheating for this since his wife was sharing the same feelings. She admitted last night that she wanted her leg in a full cast for years.

You see when she was 18 in college she broke her leg and was in a cast for 2 months and loved the experience of using crutches full time. She admitted that to him one before he was to meet with that escort with the broken leg...

"I should have cancelled that dam escort"

The phone brought him out of his thoughts.

"Mr. Marielli," said his secretary,

"someone is on the phone regarding your wife."

"Take a message," said Mario.

"I'll talk to her when I get home," thinking that she was on the phone wanting to talk about divorce maybe and he was not ready.

"I'm sorry for the misunderstanding Mr. Marielli, but it's not your wife," said his secretary.

"The nurse says she's from General Hospital and your wife has
been admitted due to an accident. She wouldn't tell me anymore."

Mario thanked her as she transferred the call to his phone.

"This is Mario Marielli, who am I speaking to?" he asked with urgency.

"Yes, Mr. Marielli, I'm Marianne, a nurse at General Hospital"

"What the hell is wrong? What happened to her?"

"Sir, your wife was involved in a car accident and was badly
injured."

"Oh God," he said and he took a seat at his desk remembering her face with she saw him with the escort,

"How badly is she hurt?"

"She suffered from a serious head injury and a really bad broken right leg. She broke both bones in her lower leg, tibia and fibula plus the femur of her upper leg. She wont be walking for months without cast and crutches. She didn't have any internal bleeding or any other injuries. Right now she is being monitored in the ICU."

"Is she going to be OK?" asked Mario.

"Well the doctor says that we will know more in the next couple of hours. She was unconscious at the accident site. You can get a more detailed account once you come into the hospital. You'll need to fill out some forms regarding her care."

"OK I'm on my way," he said in a hurry and hung up the phone.

He went to his coat rack and started putting on his coat and left his office.

-------------------------------------

Sydney opened her eyes. She felt like she had been sleeping for ever. But she was in a lot of pain. She was thinking to herself, 'Where am I? What happened?' She looked around and didn't recognize her surroundings. She was still drowsy and trying to knock off some of the sleep when a nurse came into the room.

"Oh I see you're finally awake," said the nurse. She came over to Sydney's bed side and clearly saw that her patient was confused.

"I'll be right back with the doctor."

Sydney tried to move, but was overwhelmed with a surge of major pain in her right leg. Her head was worst of all. It felt like her brain was about to ooze out of her ears.

The nurse finally came back into the room followed by a middle aged looking black man. He had gray hair at his temples and had kind eyes. He smiled at Sydney and lifted her left hand so he could get a pulse from her wrist.

"Sydney, I'm Dr. Russell and you are in the hospital," he said as the nurse plumped up her pillows so she can sit up.

"How long have I been here?" asked Sydney.

"A few weeks dear" said the doctor. "Do you know why you are here or how you got here?"

Sydney gave it some real thought and was at a complete blank.

"No," she answered.

"You don't remember what happened to you?" he asked as he shined a light into each eye.

"No, I don't remember anything. All I know is that I'm in a lot of pain," she said with a hoarse voice and scratchy throat.

"Can I have some water?"

"Sure thing honey," said the nurse as she was leaving the room.

"And get her some pain meds," he said as he handed her an order for the pharmacy.

"Where is the pain, Sydney?" asked the doctor.

"Everywhere," she answered.

Dr. Russell took his stethoscope and asked her to take a deep breath a couple of times and then to cough. Finally, he took a seat next to her by the bed and asked,

"Can you wiggle your toes for me?"

She did as he asked and she grimaced in pain realizing that her leg was trapped in a strange metal contraction.

"Now, that's good" said Dr. Russell as he turned back to his patient,

"before I'm able to answer your questions, and by the expression on your face you have several, you will need to answer several of mine."

"I told you, I don't remember anything."

"Why sure you do. First of all I will ask you some simple things and then they will probably get a bit more difficult."

Dr. Russell pulled out a paper that had some personal notes about Sydney that was compiled by her husband, her parents and her best friend, Alicia Roberts, who have all been by the hospital on several occasion. He was glad to have some time alone with her and not deal with frantic family members who would only scare his
patient if they didn't know the extent of her injuries.

"What's your full name?" he asked.

"Sydney Evens."

"You wouldn't happen to know what today's date is, the day of the week or what year it is."

"I don't know what date it is or day of the week since you said I've been out for about two weeks."

"The year then?

There was a long pause before she answered, "I'm not sure."

"Okay," he smiled. "Whose the President?"

"Bush, how can I forget that."

"Good." he said with some concern and wrote some notes down. He then started to ask her where her birth place was, birthday, where she lived, her parents, friends, where she went to school, if she had a job, what kind of car she drove,
etc.

"Are you married?" he asked.

"No, I'm not married" she answered as if it was the most normal answer she could provide. As if nothing was wrong.

Dr. Russell finished his interview and wrote a few more notes. He finally looked up at her and smiled.

"Thank you for being so patient," he said as the nurse came back in with some water and her pain pills. Sydney popped the pills in her mouth and drank all the water in the cup. She was given some more water and the nurse left the room.

"Now to begin with Sydney, almost two weeks ago you were in a car accident" he described to her by reading the notes in the chart.

"As you can see," pointing to her right leg, "you broke your leg pretty badly. Both the femur, tibia and fibula"

She looked down at the device again.

"The standard treatment Sydney for your type of broken leg is to be in traction. A pin was passed through below the knee. Pins were also placed in your foot. Weights were attached to the pin by cords going over a pulley system. The traction keeps the bone straight and out to length while it begins to heal. Once the healing begins we put you in a full non weight bearing cast"

"Wow" she said remembering how much she wanted a leg cast for some reason

"I really did a job to it"

"Yes you did dear and once we have your leg in a full cast, crutches will be your best friends for a very long time, we are talking months, close to a year" He smiled at her before getting serious and talking again

"I am a neurologist Sydney. I diagnose and treat disorders of the nervous system, which includes your brain. It seems that the accident did not have any effects on your ability to move or your speech. It did however have an effect on your memory. You seem to be suffering from a case of amnesia."
